Benjamin Saul.
A halo of mystery
involves the death of my uncle, the sculptor Benjamin Saul (1924 – 1980). He
appeared in one of the boroughs of El Salvador, with a bullet in his head.
He fled
from Franco and from the Spain that knew no other art than the bullfighting
war-like politics of killing bulls, and the grandiloquent arrogance of the
matador, nothing less than dressed in silver and gold.
The “Loner
of Art” had passion for the feminine figure, sculpted grandeur, and it is said
that my face and my back are in his work, since I was his inspiring muse.
It is also
said that he took his fatal decision in his glorious loneliness, but I have my
doubts.
